Overview

Learn how identifying marginalized communities at the beginning of the planning process is important in planning for equitable outcomes. Learn how centering people and their experiences can influence equitable decision-making. Understand the challenges and rewards of planning through an equity lens.

As planners, we are charged with making decisions that affect the day-to-day life of our community and visitors of all ages. We do our best to analyze data and use public input  to tell the story of our communities to help plan for our future. But how can we use data and public input differently to plan with our communities and not for them?

By using Austin ISD’s Equity by Design process the district completed its first comprehensive long-range plan, which is focused on improving facility conditions and operational strategies to address systemic problems experienced by historically underserved communities. Learn how the district used data and direct engagement to center the lived experience of the community, and create accountable goals and strategies with a common goal of more equitable outcomes. Challenges and lessons learned will be discussed about planning equitably where past decision-making has not been transparent and where trust has been broken.
