Overview

One has to wonder if the 2006 movie “The Holiday” enhanced the popularity of Short Term Rentals. It seems their growth has been exponential since at least that time, with no signs of slowing. Families in particular love the flexibility, size, comfort and privacy a quaint cottage or single-family home can give them over a sterile, routine hotel room. The hotel industry has been impacted and has had to make adjustments in their marketing strategies. Positive impacts to communities include private property improvements, homeowners who stay on top of maintenance, and new, innovative community lodging options; while negative impacts include transient commercial activity in residential areas, potential for evening noise and increasing scarcity of home-living options driving up housing costs. Different communities have different opinions and goals leading to a variety of alternative ordinances and a cafeteria menu of ideas to consider. In this engaging and entertaining session, learn how two historic and tourism-centered Texas Hill Country communities have and are continuing to address the issue. You’ll definitely take away some ideas to consider for your ordinances.
