Overview

What is our role as planners in addressing these social indicators of walkability while working on and with the public realm?

Increasing walkability in our Texas cities is a hot topic-literally! 86% of women have experienced street harassment while using the public realm, and 70% of these harassers are males acting alone. Black and Latino pedestrians are killed while walking at much higher rates than white users. Systemic issues have led to major disparities in trees and therefore temperatures in our cities. What is our role as planners in addressing these social issues while working on and with the public realm? While physical barriers to walkability and public realm use are widely discussed and planned for, social indicators of walkability are less often included in our planning work but deserve just as much attention and thought. From shocking data regarding gendered experiences in the public realm to frank discussions of walking while Black to an analysis of heat effects, this panel seeks to introduce attendees to social indicators of walkability that might improve their work, explain lackluster implementation, and encourage planners to think more critically about the challenges facing pedestrians in Texas. This session will begin with a discussion of case studies and data, followed by a discussion of implications in a fireside chat format to encourage authentic and constructive discussions.
