Overview

Attendees will gain knowledge of the functionality and benefits of the interstate highway system; how TxDOT is planning and developing three new interstate highway systems authorized by Congress; and the steps the Department takes to request approval for interstate highway designation.

Congress has authorized the creation of three new interstate highway systems in Texas: Interstate 14, Interstate 69, and the Ports-to-Plains Corridor Interstate System. Creating these new interstate highways typically involves upgrading a series of existing U.S. and state highways in Texas to interstate design standards and connecting to an existing interstate highway.

This session will include an overview of each of these new interstate highway systems. The presenters will share their experiences in planning these systems, including corridor-level transportation planning, stakeholder engagement, public involvement, alternatives development, and environmental impact analysis. The presenters will also share some of the challenges they encountered and how they were able to overcome them.
