After graduating from UT Austin, she taught elementary school for thirty-two years. She and her husband, Dr. Joseph S. Portugal had two sons and retired to Paris in 2012. She has served on the Paris City Council for six years and after serving as Mayor Pro Tem for two years, she has served the last two years as Mayor. She also holds the distinction of being the first female Mayor in the City of Paris. Her hobbies are gardening and playing mahjong with her high school friends.
