Session Summary: How do you create equitable neighborhoods and resilient corridors in a world of severe disruption? The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that cities must plan for resiliency to adapt to any other uncertainties that might arise in the future. At the same time, cities must use an equity lens to make sure that marginalized groups are not further left behind. This session will present multiple case studies from small and large communities in Texas and other parts of the country. Attendees will learn how the Texas Trees Foundation is creating an urban streetscape plan for a major thoroughfare in the Southwest Medical District to combat the effects of climate change; how the City of Houston is creating a city-wide Resilient Sidewalks Plan using two neighborhoods as case studies; and how an equitable engagement process brought in voices that have been historically underrepresented.
Come and find out how these projects are providing resilient infrastructure and tools through different lenses, with a framework that engages community members and interacts with adjacent land uses – with an end goal of moving equity and resiliency from jargon to practicality.
