Overview

I gave a 15 minute presentation on this topic at 2022 National APA. It was supposed to be a very short video and discussion. The audience stayed for over an hour at the end of the day to have an open dialogue. Folks asked me to lengthen the session, include an interactive exercise, and take it to state conferences.
Who is Karen & Chad?
Types of actions this type of person takes: (straight out of the urban dictionary)...
•makes solutions to others' problems an inconvenience to he/her although s/he isn't even remotely affected.
•sues local city council after they installed a new STOP sign that hides the sun from, he/her window for two minutes a day. The sign was installed after a child on their bicycle was hit by a speeding driver and died.
•refuses to wear a face mask for her 5-minute trip to the supermarket during a pandemic. S/he harasses the workers, asks to see the manager, and threatens to sue.
•complains that he/her favorite parking spot was replaced by a ramp for wheelchairs. parks car in the old spot anyway and shoots a vlog about it.
And many, many more examples....

When you encounter a Karen or a Chad, the best approach is to follow the FBI Hostage Strategy. Afterall, Karen or Chad is holding you and others hostage with their ignorance.
Before starting you need to adopt a completely counterintuitive mindset. Take winning off the table. I will explain how to do that using a five step process. Then participants will get to use case studies to practice these techniques with each other. We'll come back together to share lessons learned.
This video provides some basic content that will be shared in the session: https://lnkd.in/gia_cDzC or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN9h4KuOaUs&t=2s.
