Overview

Identify ways to reduce status quo parking requirements that have been engrained in auto-centric environments.

Looking at ways of sharing parking through all hours of the day, ie, office parking during the day and retail and dining in the evenings/after hours.

This panel discussion will explore the idea of reducing parking requirements in suburban neighborhood centers. With the cost of approximately $15,000 per unused parking spaces, how can suburban cities recapture that land for more valuable uses and enhance a sense of place? This panel will bridge perspectives from the public sector planning official, private sector designer, land use lawyer, and the financier to provide you tips on how to achieve the right amount of parking that keeps everyone satisfied.   Strategies include letting the developer decide how much parking is needed for a given project, managing parking as a utility, and educating lenders on reduced parking requirements to create a great sense of place.
