    Position Background

    Our planning program helps communities plan through effective land use to grow, reduce risks, and sustain their natural resources. We believe that deep public participation and collaboration technologies are critical to connecting the dots on multiple levels and addressing wider community goals for resiliency, sustainability, and quality of life. We are seeking people who thrive on working with communities to make a difference on these fronts. The planning coordinator must be self-motivated to initiate and lead projects that both lead to successful planning outcomes and increases our program’s capacity to engage communities. We support planning through our CHARM scenario planning platform, direct technical support, training, and facilitation.  The hire will work as a member of the planning team to lead projects to success, expand our program, and sustain a fun but hard-working office culture.

    Qualified candidates are expected to bring subject matter expertise and experience in local planning, ordinances, drafting, and research. Stakeholder management, community dialogue and facilitation are among the valued soft skills for this position. The target years of experience for this position is 2-5 years of planning related experience. Salary range is $50k-$64k and is commensurate with applicant’s qualifications and experience.     Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    • Works with local committees and stakeholders to analyze and address local planning, development, and hazard mitigation practices
    • Designs and performs data analysis to support community planning initiatives
    • Interprets relevant federal, state, and local regulations and codes for local application
    • Identifies funding solutions for implementing planning practices
    • Group facilitation skills for planning workshops and committees
    • Updates comprehensive plans, land development/land use regulations, hazard mitigation plans, and other documents that result from local planning efforts
    • Drafts and edits local plans, ordinances and regulations in partnership with community officials
    • Identifies opportunities in plans and local ordinances that could be advanced through better community planning
    • Educates stakeholders and the general public about planning and development practices to reduce risks from natural hazards
    • Assists in establishing short and long term goals and strategic planning
    • Collaborates with others to create new and expanded urban planning
    • Develops and maintains relationships with stakeholders
    • May supervise program staff
    • Oversees daily fiscal and purchasing activities, and assists in preparation and monitoring of budgets for programs and events
    • Assists in identifying funding opportunities
    • Plans, implements and evaluates programs
    • Prepares reports on program activities
    • Develops and updates training materials and delivers training

     

    Preferred Requirements

    Degree in urban planning, regional planning, environmental management, public policy in fields related to urban planning (i.e., housing, disaster management, coastal resources), or geography.


    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

    • In depth knowledge of planning principles and practices
    • Knowledge of risk awareness principles as they relate to long-range community planning
    • Knowledge of methods and practices of planning research and data collection
    • Knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations and programs related to natural hazards, mitigation, and community planning
    • Basic knowledge of GIS technology, mapping data, and spatial analysis
    • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously
