     The City of Arlington is a full-service city operating under the council-manager form of government with eight Council members and a Mayor. The Council appoints the City Manager, City Attorney, City Auditor, and Municipal Judges. Deputy City Managers and Department Directors are appointed by the City Manager. Under the City Manager’s office, the Planning and Development Department is the lead agency for all planning and development activities and consists of four divisions: Business Services, Development Services, Strategic Planning, and Housing. The department has 112 employees and an annual operating budget of $8.4 million.

     The City of Arlington seeks a creative, experienced, and innovative Planning and Development Director with extensive planning experience and a proven track record of navigating complex planning and development issues. The ideal candidate must hold a master’s degree from an accredited college or university, with major coursework in urban planning or a related field and have a minimum of ten years of experience in urban planning. A minimum of five years in a senior level position leading a progressive planning agency is preferred. Experience that includes significant work in local government is desired. AICP certification is strongly preferred. A combination of education, training, and experience the provides the required knowledge and skills may be considered.
