                                        Job Description

     

    JOB TITLE:                     Assistant City Planner                                   

    FLSA:                              Non-Exempt

    DEPARTMENT:               Community Development                              

    PAY RANGE:                  TBD

    ACCOUNTABLE TO:        Planning Director

            

    PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under general supervision is responsible for assisting the Planning Director in coordinating the activities of the Planning and Code Enforcement Divisions of the City of Shawnee. Work varies little from established standards and procedures.

     

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Must have the ability to communicate orally and in writing with the public, Planning Commission, and other agencies;
    • Physical demands are limited to sitting, reaching, and lifting up to 35#s (greater with assistance);
    • Work is performed generally in an office setting and is controllable, however field work may require walking and occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching; May on occasion be exposed to dust, heat, and adverse weather conditions;
    • Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.

     

    MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:

    • Assists the City Planner in the administration of the land use, parking, site development, subdivision, zoning ordinances and regulations, and the comprehensive plan of the City;
    • As directed compiles data effecting land use and prepares reports on the data;
    • Assists in the issuance of permits related to zoning, land use, and code enforcement duties;
    • Serves as a project manager, guiding the development process from conceptual to completion;
    • Conducts research regarding property ownership, current and past permits and applications, and their applicable codes;
    • May serve as an alternative representative to the City Commission, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, or Urban Renewal Authority;
    • May assist in the preparation of applications for Federal and State Grants for various projects;
    • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of planning and development related materials such as the zoning ordinance, comprehensive plan, and subdivision regulations among others;
    • Effectively communicates with others, orally and in writing;
    • Enforces regulations and ordinances fully and impartially while maintaining good relations with the general public and other City employees;
    • Prepares records and reports of the activities of the department and submits them to the appropriate authority;
    • Contact with the public is extensive and involves communication of complex information often requiring tact and diplomacy particularly in responding to and resolving difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints;

     

    SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS: None required     

     

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Planning or related field, PLUS
    • One year experience in the planning or zoning field preferred; Computer literacy mandatory and working knowledge of GIS preferred;
    • Must posses a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and maintain a status of insurability.      

     

    EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND EXPECTATIONS:

     

    • Must demonstrate the ability to take the initiative;
    • Must be able to work independently;
    • Maintains a professional appearance;
    • Duties require limited movement and work is performed in surroundings where physical discomforts and hazards are minor and controllable.
    • Assists in the review of new development plans for compliance with zoning ordinances and regulations;
    • May assist the public with subdivision development, pre-applications, preliminary and final plats, zoning changes, and conditional use and variances as appropriate;
    • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

Jobs Requirements
