The APA Texas Chapter and the Texas Public Health Association are partnering to build local coalitions for planning healthy communities in Texas. Healthy Planning Coalitions are being invited to partner with APA Texas Chapter and TPHA to submit proposals for proposing projects for healthy community planning.

APA and the American Public Health Association (APHA) recently received a $3M award from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to help bridge the connection between planning and public health. APA and APHA are looking to award grants to partnerships led by both APA Chapters and APHA Affiliates to improve healthy eating, active living, tobacco cessation, and access to health care. Awards will be for $100,000 to $150,000 for 15 months.

APA and APHA members will serve as core leaders of these coalitions, which may include cross-sectional participation from other sectors, such as:

  • Parks and recreation: parks agencies, “friends of parks” groups, YMCA, etc.
  • Transportation: transportation agencies, bicycle/pedestrian advocacy groups, etc.
  • Social services: municipal agencies, social justice organizations, food banks, etc.
  • Community development: city management, economic/community development corporations, community development financing institutions, socially responsible developers, neighborhood associations, faith-based organizations, etc.
  • Schools: public and private schools, pre-school and head start, etc.
  • Urban design: architecture, landscape architecture, etc.
  • Real estate: residential and commercial developers, development organizations, etc.

Letters of Intent from APA Chapters for building local coalitions are due on Tuesday, December 2 at 5pm eastern. Complete proposals, including all accompanying documents, are due on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 11:59 PM EST.

Communities or organizations interested in proposing a project should contact APA Texas Chapter Executive Administrator Mike McAnelly at  not later than November 28th.
