2014 APA Texas Chapter
State Planning Conference
Short Course for Appointed and Elected Officials
October 15 to 18, 2014, Frisco, Texas
Great Communities! People + Places + Planning
This year’s APA Texas Chapter Conference will be held in Frisco, in the rapidly growing North Dallas area. Frisco is one of the top 15 fastest growing cities in the US with 50,000 or more population, according to 2013 Census estimates. Six Texas cities on the fastest-growing list aren’t just booming suburbs. They do have their share of outbound commuters every morning, but they also serve as significant job centers on their own. For suburban cities like Frisco, much of the growth comes from migration from other states and other parts of Texas, In 2013, Frisco added roughly 2,300 homes. This year, it will add 2,000 more. With around 140,000 people now, population forecasts exceed more than 300,000. The conference will feature speakers and sessions focusing on growth occurring in North Texas Communities and the lessons learned from their experiences. Mobile workshops will tour Frisco, Plano, Richardson, and McKinney, as well as Downtown Dallas. Planning officials participate in the 43rd Annual Short Course, which is Texas’ best training opportunity for new and experienced planning board members. Evening social events will provide networking and entertainment, including an Oktoberfest at the Frisco RoughRiders Dr. Pepper Ballpark. Preconference activities on Wednesday afternoon include a Leadership Forum for Emerging Planning Leaders, an AICP Exam Preparation Workshop, and a mobile workshop to tour the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Center.
