1. Professional Development
Encourage attainment and recognition of AICP certification
& related continuing education.
Promote AICP at
conference, in section meetings, in newsletter and on web page.
Conduct AICP exam preparation
workshops (Chapter-wide and section level), encouraging use of study
groups and study guides.
Advise members, students and
prospective members of opportunities for continuing education &
professional development.
Promote use of CPDP credits.
Offer financial assistance for AICP
exam costs to those in need.
Recognize the significant contributions of Texas planners
to the planning profession.
Nominate exemplary
members to the AICP College of Fellows and encourage use of FAICP members
as mentors whenever appropriate.
Conduct statewide professional development workshops or
symposia.
Conduct annual
Planning 101 course for Planning Officials at conference.
Conduct
workshops at regional levels.
Identify relevant
conferences/seminars/training sessions offered by other organizations and
pursue opportunities to partner with other organizations.
Maintain and encourage the use of the
Guide to Urban Planning in Texas Communities.
Transition the VITAL planning tape
library, expanding to CD and DVD.
Utilize Educational Committee as forum
for ongoing development and implementation of professional development
activities.
Support planning education in Texas at the post-secondary
level.
Provide communication
and support for planning programs at Texas universities through the
Education Foundation.
Assist
Colleges and Universities involved in development conferences through
teleconferencing, hosting, and/or promoting professional development
possibilities to assist outlying and smaller Sections to benefit from the
information.
Assist with PAB accreditation of
planning schools.
Provide grant support to student
planning organizations at Texas planning schools.
Offer scholarships to students at
accredited schools.
Provide support for further
development of non-accredited programs at TSU (Houston), TSU (San Marcos),
UTSA, UTEP, and UTPANAM.
Provide student sponsorships for
students attending state conference.
2. Annual Conference and Planning 101
Continue to expand and improve the annual planning
conference.
Provide high quality
sessions, tours, events and other activities to share the Section's
planning programs and address current planning issues.
Consider development of specific
policies and procedures that offer more consistency from year to year,
such as:
* Consideration of hiring a professional meeting planner.
* Setting overall Chapter budget goals and education goals
for the
Conference.
* Consider policies for key conference elements, i.e.
selection of keynote
speaker, requiring speakers to provide
paper handouts or digital version
for web publication, scholarships for
non-students also.
Offer CPDP, TMLI and CLE credit for
participants.
Provide for Planning 101 curriculum to
relate to updated Planning Commissioners Workshop series and Guide to
Urban Planning.
Update
Conference Planning Manual annually to include information from most
recent conference.
3. Communication and Outreach
Continue to improve the Chapters Web Page and Newsletter.
Dedicate a regular
section in the newsletter to Planning Commissioner information.
Solicit articles from allied
professions and selectively distribute to a wider audience.
Enhance the website to allow faster
communication and interaction among members on emerging planning issues.
Continue to improve on ways to tell the TxAPA Planning
Story.
Publicize the Annual
Conference and Planning 101 Course through sources other than APA.
Send information to local papers about
those who complete the Planning 101 curriculum and those who receive
Planning Awards.
Assist TexasAPA award winners with the
nominations process and endorsements for national awards.
Continue to promote the Texas Planning
Excellence Recognition Program.
Develop/expand collaborations with other professional associations, COGs
and similar organizations as well as with planning associations in
adjacent states and internationally.
Generate planning articles for TML's
Texas Town & City Magazine.
Create a standardized model and
support information for career days.
Prepare
legislative fact sheet/packet about the Chapter that can be given to
legislators or key staff members.
Continue work on an overall
communications plan/outreach strategy for the Chapter.
4. Strengthen Network Involvement
Educate planners
involved in existing networks about the use of list-serves, the web page
and the newsletter.
Encourage the establishment of new
networks for planning specialties of significant interest by:
* Preparing a Network flyer with advantages/benefits and
registration form.
* Develop overall strategy for increasing plan commissioner
involvement,
including:
* Sending Plan Commissioner Network & APA information to
non-member
commissioners.
5. Strengthen Section Involvement
Encourage sharing of
successful Section projects and programs with all Sections through the Web
Page, Newsletter and creation of a Section Director list serve.
Organize a Section Directors workshop
or roundtable at annual conference.
6. Legislative Affairs
Educate legislators on planning issues and encourage state
action that strengthens planning objectives
Support and coordinate
with CPAT for an effective ongoing legislative program.
Coordinate with TML and others
(including but not limited to TARC) on legislative issues before and
during the Legislative Session.
Ensure
TxAPA volunteers serve on TML Legislative Committee and provide
legislative input and testimony as needed.
Raise
awareness of CPAT and encourage membership in the Network.
Coordinate with CPAT to develop a list of Chapter legislative priorities
and provide to the membership as well as TML, TARC and elected state
officials.
7. Membership
Increase Chapter membership, providing broader base of
diversity in Chapter activities.
Support and increase
student membership and involvement.
Increase awareness of the Chapter-only
membership option, especially for planning commissioners, council members,
small towns and allied professions.
Send
direct mail invitation to planning officials by March each year and for
annual conference.
Publicize member benefits and
activities to TML member city officials.
Encourage
cities to support membership for staff and officials in both large and
small cities.
Provide information on APA membership
to participants in Planning and Zoning Workshops and the Short Course.
Increase the retention of existing
members using surveys and other ways to determine what they expect from
their TxAPA membership.
Explore other new opportunities for
communicating with potential new members from allied professions.
Use personal letters and
questionnaires to determine reasons why members have dropped their
membership.
Continue
to encourage membership for recent college graduates through the New Texas
Planner program. |
